The Reality of Addiction in the LGBTQ+ Community
LGBTQ+ individuals are known to have higher rates of substance abuse than the general population. The risk is higher for such groups as they are subjected to discrimination, stigma, rejection by family and pressure from society. Some resort to drugs or alcohol to deal with these issues, fostering a cycle of dependence that is sometimes hard to break.
Stories of Strength & Recovery
Avery’s Journey: From Party Scene to Purposeful Living
Avery, a 27-year-old transgender man, had been trapped in the cycle of addiction for years. After experiencing gender dysphoria and family rejection, he turned to alcohol and club drugs to tide him over. It wasn’t until he found out about Q Space Detox, an LGBTQ+ inclusive rehab center, that he felt really understood. With the help of therapy and peer support, Avery was able to work through his trauma and create a meaningful life. Today, he is sober and is a mentor for young LGBTQ+ people navigating the same issues.
Leo’s Story: Rebuilding After Loss
When a gay man in his 40s lost his partner to an overdose, Leo spiraled into opioid addiction and reached rock bottom when he lost his job and became homeless. Upon knowing Leo’s struggles with addiction, his friend Jeremy referred him to a drug residential detox. Leo was given the proper medical support, therapy, and a welcoming recovery community to regain control of his life. He is still sober and in an outpatient program, going to 12-step meetings and working on regaining employment with the help of a life skills program.p.
Emma’s Triumph: Breaking Free and Finding Herself
A lesbian, Emma, 35 years old, battled alcohol addiction for more than a decade. After coming out, she was rejected by her conservative family and began to drink to avoid the pain. It eventually harmed her relationship career and affected her mental health. When a close friend encouraged her to seek treatment at an LGBTQ+ affirming rehab center, that became a turning point. Through specialized therapy, group support, and holistic healing practices, Emma regained confidence in herself. Today, she is 8 months sober, working a program in AA, and finding joy and happiness in your sponsor family and with her AA fellowship.

Yes! An LGBTQ+-specific program is Life-Saving. An LGBTQ+ person needs to be their authentic self in group with their peers, with their therapists and their staff. An LGBTQ+ person who has experienced external traumas must first feel safe in an affirming rehab center with staff and peers who understand their experience. Once they feel safe, then they will open up in group, bc their peers relate and they loose the feeling that they are different. The staff uses correct and affirming words and understands the traumas an LGBTQ+ person experiences. The staff is highly trained in trauma-informed care. At this point, when an LGBTQ+ person feels safe in all aspects, they may begin to open up, stop showing up as their persona, and their authentic self begins treatment, and then, recovery is possible.
Recovery is a lifelong journey. While detox can take days or weeks, true healing happens over months and years through therapy, self-care, and continuous support, often through a 12 step program.
